MIXED MESSAGES: DAY 1

Starting this week, Jill and I will be doing Theme Weeks until we are over it. We will pick a theme each week, and wear as many adhering outfits as we can stand. I already cheated on our very first go, but fortunately I had a few leftovers that just happened to fit in. We are hoping our themes will inspire you to try something new out of your closet. Send in some pics of your thematic look, or give us some ideas for upcoming themes!

Week 1 is Mixed Prints. I cheated a little here since the sweater isn’t technically a print, but you get the idea. The reason these two patterns work together is because they are simple (polka dots and plaid are nothing crazy) and in the exact same color palate (black and white). I tossed in these spearmint jeans to add to the fun.

It’s Hip To Be Square

I bought this little shift dress probably 2 years ago from TJ Maxx or Nordstrom Rack or one of those for what I remember to be a killer price.  I intended to wear it as a hot weather school dress – I like how the extended shoulder looks like they could pass for “sleeves” – but black, thick, lined fabric is not exactly conducive with zero air conditioning.

With the slightly warmer temperatures (like, in the 40s) we saw, I was on the hunt for a skirt in my closet. I rediscovered this dress towards the back of my closet and decided to give it a new life as a layering piece. I originally tried it on with my J. Crew Snowcat blouse (AGAIN. I know.), but the sleeves were a little too voluminous. This pink top has much slimmer sleeves for a sleeker look. I added sheer stockings and my favorite wedges, and figured the beading was all the jewelry I needed (plus some small geometric earrings you can’t even see).

Lazy Lazy Lazy Lazy Lazy Lazy Jane

She wants a drink of water so she waits and waits and waits and waits and waits for it to rain.

I’ve felt like death warmed over all week. I don’t have a fever and the stuff coming out of my nose is clear, so I’m not sick enough to stay home. But: ugh. The solution? Wear undercover pajamas to work.

These “Magic Pants” look a lot like my Jessica Simpson ones, but are made of a much nicer fabric, are a more appropriate length, and the waistband isn’t enormous.  I wore these pants all weekend (this outfit almost exactly to dinner on Friday. And to a movie on Saturday…), so I naturally reached for them for comfort on Monday morning.

And remember how I said I sometimes wear this cardigan around the house like a robe? Throw in a t-shirt and some shoes with Nike Air technology, and I might as well be in my jammies. The pink necklace (another gift from Mom!) adds a pop of unexpected color (my sister read somewhere that this pink is the new hot color(?)), and I like how the zigzags around the jewels reference the pattern in the cardigan.

Please excuse my face. I slept for maybe 12 minutes the night before and am full of (clear) mucous.

Groove Is In The Heart

This turtleneck always makes me think of Deee-Lite. But now that I’ve rewatched the video for the purpose of this blog, it turns out she doesn’t wear stripes at all! Though, the video features a lot of black/white stripe furniture… ahhh memory is such a funny thing.

Mom bought me this skirt (which came with the glitter belt!) to go with the blazers she also gave me. I kind of froze when it came to getting dressed for work, since I haven’t been in a school mindset for two weeks. Several variations of this look were strewn across the room that morning, and this is what I ended up with. Very simple, but also pretty quirky and fun all at once.

Guess That’s Why They Call It “Window Pain”

FINALLY FOUND: super comfy black wedges!!! I have been searching for the perfect pair forever, and I can finally check these off the list. Not only are they the perfect wedge height for me, these Cole Haan’s have Nike Air technology inside. You would never know by just looking at them, but I can really feel they little air pockets inside the wedge when I lean back on my heels, or am stomping quickly down the hallway. SWOON.

AND they are even more on sale now than when I bought them a few weeks ago. I’m seriously considering buying several more colors/textures.

*Side note: I’ve had this little windowpane jumper dress since high school.
