TRUE COLORS: DAY 4

This was from the Friday before St. Patrick’s Day. I knew I wanted to wear some green, but not in the typical way. And I also wanted to keep the weird color combo theme going.

I pulled this old scarf out of retirement for the green, and paired it with this oatmeal/oxblood sweater. Green and burgundy isn’t anything Earth shattering, but the colorful bangles add some unexpected brights.

MIXED MESSAGES: DAY 5

What a better way to end the week than with a Trifecta? I brought this scarf home and realized it just happened to have all the same colors are this jacket. Both have insane colors and patterns, but it works because the color palate is identical. The black on black texture pattern of the tee is also crazy, but I treated it like a plain black tee.

MIRROR, MIRROR ON THE WALL

This past Saturday, I had the pleasure of waking up at 5:30 am to get myself to the Nordstrom downtown at 7! I got to attend Nordstrom’s Spring Beauty Trend Show. The show started at 8, but we got there early to snag good seats and first dibs at the pastries.

The actual show was pretty tedious. There were 3 different themes (Beauty Unveiled  Color Crush, and Urban Flirt) and each had 9 speakers come out and hawk their brand’s chosen products, all with the promise of “flawlessness”. The best parts were the mini runway shows at the top of each theme, and the ridiculously adorable Virginie Courtin-Clarins.

The loot was a great free tote (mint and tan “leather”) and some samples. Jill and I both had booked appointments after the show with La Mer and Nars. My mini facial at La Mer was heavenly, and I walked away with some new skincare knowledge (serum is for the epidermis  moisturizer is for the dermis) and about $80 worth of product on my face! I thought very seriously about The Concentrate which eliminated all redness and made my skin feel like silk, but I was not prepared to plunk down $300 just yet! Becky from Nars was beyond fun, and she got this drugstore gal to invest in a duo eyeshadow (which I just now discovered they gave me the wrong shade!), eyeliner (in Rue Saint-Honore), and lip pencil (in Lodhi).

Jill and I grabbed some lunch and shopped after all the other girls dropped. All in all, we spent NINE HOURS on the Magnificent Mile!

Here’s what I wore:

HIGHLIGHTER REEL

J.Crew is showing a bunch of super similar neon sweaters for Spring, but I found this one lonely highlighter pink sweater on the sale rack at Gap. Don’t you love when there’s just one left of something on killer sale, and it just happens to be your size?! I feel like this has been happening a lot for me – I sense the retail gods have some negative karma in store for me soon…

I paired this neon pink with a few dark army green pieces for a casual Saturday look. Hot tip: black or white enhance the vibrance of neon colors. Temper your brightest brights with another neutral: grey, brown, navy, tan, cream, or army green. You might also consider pairing neon with its pastel cousin (hot pink with ballet pink, bright yellow with pale canary, etc).

Meeeow

I got to go to another StyleChicago event this past weekend, this time at the Sofitel. No fashion show this time, but there were all kinds of fun beauty treatments, deep discounts on clothes and bags, skinny cocktails, sushi, and other girly snacks. I got a much needed mani and ate a bunch of goodies. Most of the girls got their eyebrows threaded (I’m STILL trying to grow mine out!), and there were also facials, Moroccan oil treatments, massages, and makeup tutorials.  But once all the girls got together, we ended up chatting away and forgetting about everything around us!

Here is the other bag I won. I got to the event first, so I was awkwardly milling around with my phone in one hand and a glass of wine in the other. I found a very short line to sign up to win a Luna bag. I thought it was just the reusable bag, but I was bored, so I signed both Jill and me up for one. The idea was that you put your name and phone number on a piece of paper, and they would text you towards the end of the night if you won. I noticed my text, and assumed that everyone won the cheap little bag, so I prompted Jill to check for hers. She didn’t get one. So, I headed over to collect my little grocery bag, and the girls clapped and said Congratulations! Huh?? Then they handed me the bag filled with MORE LOOT!

It was mostly just Luna stuff, but it was such a surprise!

AND, because we bought tickets for the next fashion show, Jill and I also got to take home 2 more full sized products each.

That’s A Wrap

FREEZING OUT! I wore this just to go shopping, but shopping in the city means a lot of outdoor time. My favorite trick for when it’s super cold is to wear my cheapest sweater. You heard me! Cheap sweaters are made of cheap, synthetic fabrics which trap in your body heat. This wrap sweater is an old go to for cheap warmth. I had forgotten about these (also cheap!) fur lined boots. Paired with wool socks, these babies kept my feet nice and toasty.

The drawback to all this synthetic heat is that the fabrics don’t really breathe once you are inside. Between my plastic layers and the additional 50% off sale items at J. Crew, I was in a bit of a sweat.

(I only tossed on these necklaces for a little pop of color in the pictures, but I took them off to make room for a big scarf once I headed out.)

It’s Turtle Time!

WOW, I forgot how much better pictures look when taken outside! Jill had been trying to get me to agree to outdoor pictures for several days – she is made of hearty Greek stock and I am a sad little wimp. I finally agreed on this day when I was pretty bundled up. It was beautifully sunny out and actually not too cold, until the wind hit us! Even she realized we had made a terrible mistake. We sucked it up and took a few shots quickly, and then agreed not to do this again unless the temperature was at least 45 degrees.
